The Jargon Game

Event Type:
Professional Seminar
Date:
Friday, December 6, 2019 - 12:20pm
Geosciences
Location:
Morill 222
Last year we asked you to describe your research without using jargon. Here is an example
I study tiny sand size life at the bottom of the sea that died a long time ago. This life tells me a story about how the Earth has changed from cold and hot over time. The main study of mine is from along time ago shortly after large land broke up and made many smaller lands and new seas to a little before the event of the big rock that hit Earth and killed a lot of life. I study how and why tiny life at the bottom of the sea changed as these new seas grew.

This year we are taking the game to the next level. Instead of doing a general description of what we don, we are going to use the ’ten hundred’ (1000) more common English words to describe a lab, field or modeling procedure that you use in your work.

How to play
  1.  Use the ’ten hundred’ (1000) more common English words to describe a lab, field or modeling procedure that you use in your work. See this link for the words you can use.
  2.  Submit your entry on a page in this google slides file by 12:10 on Friday
  3.  Write your name on the board when you come into room 222 before prosem.

Then the ‘game’ is that we read each one and try to figure out which of the names on the board wrote the description.
Everyone who submits a 'jargon-less’ description of a procedure gets a small prize.

If you can’t be there but still want to participate, contribute a description and tell someone to write your name on the board for you.

Last year’s game was pretty fun. We had some laughs at the creativity of the entries and even learned a bit about eachother’s work.
